40 Ford sedan location of choke & throttle rod joint?

i purchased choke and throttle replacement rods for my 1940 ford sedan deluxe. Prior to installing, i noted the rubber joint on the new choke rod was not at the same distance from the carburetor. Overall the rod was a bit longer as well. the rubber joint of the new rod was at the firewall where as the old rod rubber joint was closer to the carburetor and several inches from the firewall. Where should the rubber joint land between the carburetor and the firewall? what is the purpose of the rubber joint? Can the rubber joint be removed, the rod welded (turned into a rigid rod) and simply bent into position? Many thanks in advance.

I would not eliminate the rubber joint. I think it helps keep down engine noise and vibrations from transmitting into the inside. Also they allow for any misalignment and helps retain smooth operation. The rods can be adjusted underneath the dash.

I can only offer a guess as to what you have there. A photograph would go far in offering a definitive answer.
My guess?
well, if you in fact have the correct rods, then I'd say you have the pieces mixed from right to left, left to right.
Try switching them around and see if they better align with the carburetor attachment points.

Kube, that engine is beautiful.

Thank you Kube! your guess was right on! I had no idea that there was a left and right and funny thing is that the previous owner didn't either as the choke knob could not be pushed all the way in. Many thanks for the knowledge and the learning!!

DAMN, that's an ugly engine/vehicle. NOT!!

Hope my display engine turns out looking like that.

I have a similar problem, except both rods are too long. I'm working on a '40 pickup. Pickups weren't listed by the parts suppliers, so I bought those listed for cars. Is there a difference between car and pickup?
