Ford winged speedo
 

HI, I'm looking at buying a speedo for my T It is the John-Manville Ford script. looks to be in fair shape. Is $250 a fair price! Thanks for the Help.

With rebuilt model A speedometers being offered at $225 for the common brand, I'd then wonder if the unit is functional as is. If it is then it's in the ballpark as far as price is concerned.

It all depends on condition. Is the faceplate clean and clear? These are not available reproduction and restoring them is not an option. The advantage of the Johns-Manville is that most of the interior components are brass-not pot metal like the Stewarts, so they are easier to repair. You should be able to spin the shaft and see if the needle moves. If it does, and the face is clean, the price of 250.00 is very fair.

Ballpark would be about 1914 to 1917. Johns Manville would more than likely be the Ford Special. That model used a different drive and gear at the wheel then say the Stewarts.

The Johns-Manville Ford special speedometer was available from Ford Motor Company from October 1914 thru July 1915. Ford ceased installation of this speedometer in July 1915, and after this date, speedometers became accessories from the dealership or the speedometer company.

The JM speedometer used a centrifugal type weight to make the needle move and is a good speedometer. The internal frame is made of pot metal, but in my experience restoring these speedometers, the pot metal is usually in good condition. For the price you are about to pay, the lens should not be cracked and the silver dial face should be clean. I hope this helps,
