32 Ford Leaking Water Pump

1 Attachment(s)
The later model water pump on my deuce is leading from the grease nipple. My brother told me it might be the shaft seals. Any ideas if this is something that's a relatively easy fix or do I have to send it somewhere for a rebuild?

Thanks!

Eric

Start by replacing the grease nipple.

Where is the best place to get one of those?

Looks like a '36 pump which calls for a pressure relief grease fitting. Try Third Gen Automotive, McMinnville, TN.

Re: 32 Ford Leaking Water Pump

It is very different because of the pressure relief valving, which was added to the original pumps for the '36 model year. Excess grease gun pressure can fracture the cast iron pump housing.

Re: 32 Ford Leaking Water Pump

Ok, so even though the one in the link I posted looks very different from the one currently on my water pump, I should swap mine out for the new one and see if that does the trick?

Sorry! But I must ask- what good is changing the grease nipple going to achieve, other than eliminating the possibility of cracking the housing through excess hydraulic pressure? Water is obviously still bypassing the seal....or am I missing something?

Carbon face seal is shot. Easiest route to happiness is to buy a new pump from Michael @ 3rd Gen......I'm quite sure he has a few....complete with a relief fitting.

If I wanted to have mine rebuilt rather than buy a new one, where would I get that done?

I do rebuild them...really a do it yourself job except refacing the seal face on the
pump.

Re: 32 Ford Leaking Water Pump

Yes either the seal is bad letting water into the grease chamber or as mentioned above too much grease can crack the pump casting, which could be the problem also. Fords Zerk type fittings on the 32-35 pumps did not have a check valve inside so any excessive pressure would leak back out once the grease hand pump was removed. In 36 Ford used pressure relief valves on their grease fitting. Your pump does look to be 36 because the pump casting for the lube fitting is angled away from the pulley to allow more room for the grease gun.

Re: 32 Ford Leaking Water Pump

Thanks for the explanation. If the pump casting is cracked, does that mean that basically I have to get a replacement pump?

Does anyone recommend a rebuild kit to try replacing the seal first?

It's odd that this just started happening spontaneously but the car sat for 18 months until April.

Most all vendors sell the rebuild kits.Midwest Early Ford in OH, V8 Ford Sales in SC to name a couple..There are more. Not hard to find. The kits are on EBAY also.
Here is V8 Ford sales in SC.No grease fitting tho. New pumps are $89. Not singling them out -just easy for me to find it for you. Or send it to Charlie-he gave you his contact info.

Re: 32 Ford Leaking Water Pump

Thanks. That’s very helpful. How do I confirm the exact year of my water pump so I get the right kit?

Re: 32 Ford Leaking Water Pump

Not that it matters, and this is not a recommendation, but several years ago when I did this job on my 34, I got the kits from Carpenter's. As posted previously, kits available from many vendors.

Year of your pump does not matter.... Kits fit all

Re: 32 Ford Leaking Water Pump

Take a photo of the whole pump at the same angle of your closeup photo and post it here to confirm that it is a '36 pump.

If the pump casting is cracked you should buy a new pump.

Re: 32 Ford Leaking Water Pump

Currently any rebuild kit, or new pump any vendor is selling comes from carpenters. All vendors essentially sell them for the same price.
