well said, my Father was part of the troops who followed in the next weeks. he was a machine gunner, part of the 42nd Rainbow Div. he has now past but his memory lives on. Incredible what these men endured for our freedom.

My good neighbor I grew up across the street from was the same way. I later came to find out he was in the Invasion of Okinawa. He "Never" said a word or talked about it!!! He and one other platoon mate were the only "original" survivors of his group.....His platoon was replenished 3 times, the third he was given an In-field commission as an Officer as ALL previous Officers were KIA (needless to say, given the history, he was not in favor of it). He ended up telling his story on the NBC Tom Brokaw 75th Anniv show on WWII.

OMG.... rockfla, you are my new 'best friend'. I'd love to hear a little about what I am looking at. I'm vague on details of the early ones. Maybe a PM, if not appropriate here. (My experience has only been with GPW's, and a couple MB's)

My dad as a Captain in the 3rd AD. Thank God he made it back.
Sadly, Major General Rose did not.

Well said. I can't imagine the sacrifices and bravery this generation gave for the greater good. Barely a mention on the news.

Thank you "19Fordy" for remembering, and for keeping this day in our thoughts & prayers. It was slightly overlooked by WH again, this second year in a row.

I never forget June 6th - as my Pops was on a submarine in WWII and his stories about their escapades were something to behold.

He lied and tried to get in at 16 (they wouldn't let him), he went back a year later and lied at 17 . . . and they let him in. So many of these solders went to war as "kids" - and if they survived, came out as seasoned adults.

I can't imagine being 17 years old and being on a diesel sub in the middle of the Pacific??? Countless thousands of others gave their last full measure - so we can be free and live the lives that we do. We will always owe the fighters and their families of WWII an eternal debt . . .

Freedom is Not free. Many great men and woman, throughout the years, have
gave their lives, so the people of this country can live as freely as possible.
We live in one of the greatest countries ever. :)

Many people, in many countries, live with hardly No Freedom, what a shame.
Keep ALL people in our prayers, that they can someday enjoy true freedom.
