Stewart Warner Horn Brushes?
 

I’ve identified my horn as a Stewart Warner. It is missing one of the brush holders and the brush inside it. Are the brushes and brush holders sold by Mike’s, Snyders, etc generic enough to use? I notice Mikes says theirs are for a Sparton horn but they don’t have others called out for other brands of horn. Snyders also offers only one variety of brushes and they look just like what Mikes offers. The tension bus bar (as Mikes calls it) doesn’t look like what the pictures I have of a SW either. I also need to change the mounting screw for the brush holder. Can I just use them anyway and mount with a different screw?

I can't answer your question but when working on a SW horn you need to remember that the nut on the end of the armature that holds the vibrator disc on is LEFT HAND threads!

They are close enough that they could be made to work. I made brushes from small electric motors the first time I repaired one.

I can't help with the brush holder. But I have a variety of small brushes that came out of a motor shop. If you can provide the brush dimensions and a photo of a brush. I'll see if I can match it.

When replacing brushes with other than the proper ones make sure the composition is the same as, or close to the composition of the originals. "Not all brushes are made equal".

I’ll try to post a picture of what I’m working with and I’ll try using a new set of brushes and brush holders from one of the vendors and see if they work. Thank you everyone for your feedback!

I would build this holder myself. A piece of brass square tubing cut to length. A brass nut is soldered to one end (hard soldering if necessary), the slots are filed to the other end... The cable can also be better soldered to brass. An old brush filed to fit, a spring and screw will be found...

This shouldn't be great art. It's not all about beauty here. The function is crucial.

To me, it makes sense to use available parts even if they have to be modified to work properly. Of the five different types, they are all very similar in construction and some even have interchangeable piece parts. The width and thickness of motor frames vary but armature & fields are very similar. Only one make used bushings on the armature shaft but it is the rarest make of the five. The hardware is about the same for all makes and some of it interchanges between makes.

If you set them all next to each other, it's hard to tell them apart.

I am trying to restore a Sparton horn and need to rewire the coils and the wire is about
19 or 20 gage copper with a real thin insulation on it. Does anyone know where that wire
can be purchased ? Thank you !!

Look for magnet wire that is pre-coated with varnish.

An electric motor rewind shop, if you can find one.
