If you are ever in Detroit make sure to head out on Joy Rd. and visit the cemetery. The church is beautiful but pretty much abandoned. The cemetery is well kept but the area no so great. Probably most people who drive by don't realize Henry is buried there.

The old Ford Life magazine had a good article on Henry Ford grave site,when the article was written in early 70,s the mentioned the gas station across the road from the cemetery, it is the Ford Family cemetery dating back to the 1800,s .

Ford built a big hospital complex in Detroit, largely on his own nickel.

Mr. Ford's shrine is gone, it wasn't his gravesite, nor the car he manufactured. Fords true achievement was the Rouge, the worlds largest industrial complex in its day. This was his pride, and he came close to achieving true vertical integration (the complete control of the entire manufacturing process ,from raw materials to finished product)producing a unit of manufacture with over 5000 individual parts.
It was his shop, and he ran it as such, occaisionally shutting down entire processes if the area wasnt clean to his satisfaction, regardless of production demands.
It was Fords power base, giving him power to employ up to 100,000 men,power to influence government,power to help defeat fascism.

His legacy doesnt really exist anymore,the Rouge and its methods were overshadowed by time and progress, a product still bears his name,but its a far cry from the days where he actually had the say in building it.

Hello, the Rouge plant was said to have raw materials come in one end and a finished car out the other.Seems to make sense if you have control of all the processes,you could make the raw materials cheaper yourself. Ford also owned a railroad, rubber plantations , mines , lumber mills and the list went on .Today key word seems to be “outsourcing “.

Ford did control alot of his raw materials and processes but never achieved full vertical integration, They used a number of subcontractors, from bodies to horns to carburetors..

I keep imagining Henry looking over my shoulder as I work on my car. He probably would complain that all the add-on's are not necessary and a waste of money. I think he would be surprised to find lots of Model A's, and T's still running.

To me the A is what is seen today that makes people think of him. The Ts are just not useful any more. The A-Model is drivable, and that is what makes people think of the level of acomplishment. JMHO

Ford turned their units of production into cash by selling them to the dealers. Mr. Ford himself preferred luxury cars.

I wouldn't say he preferred them. Ford didn't make a limo so he didn't have a choice. Much like his last ride. Ford didn't make a hearse either.

I take that back... seems like they made a hearse. Why they didn't use one I'm not sure but I've seen stories that say there wasn't one around when it was needed.
