Points/Distributor repair NZ?

I regard myself as a reasonable competent mechanic but not yesterday. I installed a distributor 180 degrees out on the cam slot. I now have one failed distributor that I would like to know if it is likely repairable and if so can anyone in NZ do this or is it a trip for it to the USA and if so to whom?

Luckily I have a spare and had the sense to fit that one the right way around.

Regards
Dave Skinner

Also down south is a guy in Ashburton who i have used and happy with.

Re: Points/Distributor repair NZ?

You have not stated what vehicle and what distributor but I guess it is the divers helmet type. I have repaired several over the years that have the drive tang damaged by trying to fit them incorrectly. One even had a broken housing because it would mount up squarely to the timing gear cover. As an engineer you should be able to have a close inspection of the shaft, housing etc to see what is going on with it. Post some close up photos of it. Regards, Kevin.

Thanks so much Brian and everyone else. I'll give you call later today. To fill in the gaps the engine is an 81A and has a crab distributor. I notice that it has about 1mm of axial slop in the rotor. I wonder if this is enough of it to disengage from the cam slot resulting in me seeing no electrical pulses on the coil primary?
Regards
David

I think something else is causing no pulse.
