1936 hubcaps

Can the 1936 hubcaps be taken apart? I would like to get to the backside of the chrome or stainless center cap to remove some dents. Thanks, Art

When I was restoring hubcaps for my 1936 pickup, I drilled my small hole in the back side to be able to use air pressure to pop the stainless cover off. While several that I did were black paint under the stainless, several others were production body colors. So, there is "evidence" that hubcaps in 1936 were painted in body colors.

As Sheldon had wisely advised, small 1/8 or 3/16th hole in the cap with compressed air blowing behind the cap BUT "IF" the is bucket part of the cap has ANY rust hole, it will NOT work!!! You are then stuck destroying the "bucket" to get the cap off!!!

I'm not a "36" guy SO I cannot answer your question......I do the above posted all the time with 39 Mercury Caps.....with that said, IF you are hesitant about doing the above process or have an Issue, send it to me and I will pop it off for you!!!! Straighten the cap & polish it , IF You like......OR just pop it off and I will send it back!!!

There are still lots of 1936 hubcaps out there.

As stated -- slowly drill a hole in the center from the back side. Fill a cardboard box with towels or blankets and use an air nossle to blow the stainless off. Send the stainless to a company or person that specializes in stainless work. Sandblast the steel cap and when painting, spray the area that shows with 2 coats, spray the area where the stainless goes with one coat. Apply a thin coat (repeat -- thin coat) of vasilne around the edge of the stainless before attempting to stamp stainless back on the cap.

I created a stainless mold of 4 inch pink foam insulation and then framed it with 2 by 6 boards with a 3/4 in plywood top. Placed the stainless over the steel cap, place waxed paper over the stainless and them placed my mold over the wax paper, stainless and steel cap.
Used my large foot to stomp the mold and the stainless was in place. The wax paper leaves a little residue, but that is easily removed.

OR
You can heat the SS cap in the oven and put the "shell/bucket" in your freezer. Should drop right on and let both equalize to ambient temperature.

Thank you for the offer and I may take you uo on that. I just got the four that came with the project truck out of the box and two of them are not 36 hubcaps. The stainless part does not have an ring around the outside edge , just smooth caps. I will let you know when I can get a good full set together. I am also considering reproductions if I can get some good reports on them. Art

I would say go with original. I don’t think they are hard to find. I have some repo ones on my 38 and they are one piece all chrome, not great quality.

Please copy to this thread on colors. Or where you posted the "evidence". I would appreciate it.
