Brake Booster - Single or Dual?
 

Guy's, I am wanting to boost the brakes on our '48 M47 (F1) Pickup.


It is currently running Bendix Drum Brakes all round. At a later date I may upgrade to front discs
Which booster, single or dual, will work best with either brake option?

Ran a single booster on my '51 Merc. ( 11x2"- 11x 1-3/4" Bendix )
More than adequate.
Later switched to front disc, single booster still more than adequate.

You should consider a dual system conversion. Be sure it has an adjustable compensation valve to balance front and rear braking. The original single system is an accident waiting to happen. Any damage to the brake line from rust, etc, can leave you without braking with no warning.

Absolutely dual master cylinder system but not dual booster.

Yes I will run a dual master cylinder with the appropriate adjusting valve etc but it is which vaccum booster should I use that I am not sure about. Some say a dual booster is too sensitive for all round drum brakes and a single booster is not powerful enough for a front disc application.

The use of a booster allows braking with less effort on the driver.
Have used a single booster on drum and front disc system on the same vehicle with no sensitivity or "not powerful enough" issues.
Dual boosters are generally needed in 4 wheel disc systems.

Kinda more to it than single vs dual; diameter counts. Aftermarket boosters from single 7" up dual 9" are around. Available engine vacuum needs to be considered too.

SPACE is the first question, if you're mted on the frame probably don't have room for a dual

When I did my 40 coupe I used P&J's Power Stopper front disc brakes and the P&J power booster kit. Everything fit into place neatly, cleared the exhaust and worked great
