HOLLEY 885F vs 1901FF CARBURETOR
 

Hello there, can anyone tell me why an aluminum bowl cover plate is used on the 885F along with 2 bowl gaskets, but the 1901FF , which shares the same fuel bowl does not ?

They are two different design carburetors and don't really share anything.
And if one has two gaskets and the other does not, that is the way each was designed.

Hi there, actually i have both carbs, and have carefully inspected both, and the fuel bowls are identical, the bowl covers are different, but for some reason the 885 uses a metal plate between the top and the bowl.

It is a metering plate that regulates the air/fuel mixture under certain throttle conditions.
The size of the metering holes depend on which engine (Merc. or Linc.) the carb. is being used on.

The air shroud on the 885 is also the cover for the float bowl. The shroud also has the power valve operating mechanism and vacuum circuit installed in it. It does have multiple differences from the 1901. There are Holley parts break downs than can be found online that illustrate the differences.

The thin plate between the gaskets was for the main well air bleeds. The 885F was the first teapot design carb, and that's just the way they did it at first.

Thank you Sal. I rebuilt a 1901F for a customer, and had a heck of a time getting the pump to work properly due to warpage between either the bowl and/or the bowl cover. If there is not a firm tight mating , then the pump wont work properly. I went through about 5 used cores before i found a bowl cover that wasnt warped. I was wondering if that metal plate could be used on a 1901F to eliminate a gap due to warpage, if a suitable bowl cover couldnt be found ???

I've had the same problems on my Mercury cars with the 885. Heavy handed or careless shade tree mechanics likely tried to "fix" a lot of these back in the day.

The bowl covers on 1901 Holley carbs and later teapot 2 and 4 barrel carbs are pretty thin die cast zinc and easy to make flat again. Not so on the 885F's though, which don't really warp..
I don't think the thin plate will work right on a 1901, plus it won't really cure the warped cover problem or seal. It's very easy to carefully bend the sagging corners up again. Then don't over tighten when assmbling.

How would you recommend bending the corners back in line with air horn, to be flat again ?

With the cover inverted, carefully tap three of the four corners down (with a rawhide or nylon mallet). The 4th corner by the accel pump doesn't sag.
You can even go a little above flush, since it will straighten out when you tighten the screws, and help seal the gasket better.
