Flatty Generator

Would it hurt the generator to run it with the wires disconnected? 53 Flathead.

Re: Flatty Generator

It shouldn't.

It's not advisable to run an alternator disconnected, though.

Re: Flatty Generator

A 2 brush generator should be ok, a 3 brush generator the output has to be grounded to prevent high voltage burnout--- a 3 brush energized the fields internally s shorting the output preventing any building voltage internally (can make over 40volts).
The 2 brush as long as no power goes to fields will be ok.

Is there an easy way to tell if I have a 2 or 3 brush generator?

It looks like the 3 brush has an extra part added to it? I think I have the 2 brush with a regulator...

If you have a cut-out on top of the generator, Then it's a 3 brush. Terry

Just an update. I got Flatty cranked up and broke in..All went well. Lesson learned, put a socket on the headbolt next to the thermostat housing, before you tighten the housing down...or your socket might not go over the bolt for retorque. Thanks to all..
