Rear shock mount for a banjo rear

Will this shock mount work with a 37 rear?
If yes I only have one and would like to find one for the other side.

Well, good luck because I BELIEVE that one pictured is a LEFT-side piece. If that's true, you need to be lucky enough to find a "RIGHTY" to match that lone-LEFTY. DD

Yeah, I don’t expect to find one. I’ll keep it for ever and then it will be someone else’s problem some day. I also have 2 mounts for a 41 stabilizer bar, one side only, one year only.

As I recall, Ford went to tube shocks on the rear of '47-48 Ford and Merc's. The shock mounts bolt to the back side of the brake backing plate, using two long bolts in lieu of the stock short bolts.
Pix attached of the tube shock conversion on the rear of my '36, which has a '48 Columbia.

Check the length... Those ones that Sheldon referenced are advertised as longer, for use with lowered cars (I think). Seem like 'somewhere' I've seen others being made, but can't remember details. On the subject of the stock 46-48 brackets, like you've shown, I would speculate that it would be easy to locate those. I'm thinking of 46-48 rear ends that I've junked, and the rear ends that I've seen (few) have had those brackets. Early Ford Store, San Dimas, would be at least one place to ask. Or, someone on here, or hamb, surely has one of those rear ends 'out back'. Obviously, opinion.

I believe the original ford items were two different lengths. Folks would cut them to match. Someone on the hamb is making them new, that match, sorry I forget where to get them also.

Sorry that I forgot to answer your question. YES...they will fit your '37 rear, as that outboard end of axle is identical mounting. DD

Correct. I forget which side, but one is longer.

You know, I'm just now noticing that there are apparently TWO different versions of these arms in existence. The SINGLE version you have is a "51A-18165", whereas another pair I found shows different Ford part numbers ...."51A-18195" and "51A-18194".

It can also be noted with the PAIR of brackets that one bracket is longer than the other, apparently hanging down lower in relation to the rear end just like "cas3" noted. Just more interesting Ford facts. DD

Re: Rear shock mount for a banjo rear

What would the reason be to have one longer than the other?

Re: Rear shock mount for a banjo rear

It was likely clearance issues. A rear panhard/track bar installation would make a difference.

Okay that makes sense.

I got a tube shock kit for the rear of my '36 several years back...so far so good. It was from C&G parts. Maybe they have them for37's as well. Terry

According to their catalog C and G still carries the rear shock kit.

I tried every way possible to get those to work on my 36 pickup. they don' fit. The way the bones are attached are different on a 36 rear and 46-48 rear. Plus, where they bolt on is different. Something was always in the way. Ron

Re: Rear shock mount for a banjo rear

I like to use the GM shocks from the 70s Camaros etc. and this lower mount works well. However you have to mak an adapter for the upper mount. Quite simple. These shocks ar 30/70 and made for your weight vehicle. Giving a nice ride, Not very expensive either.

Just beware of the shock angle that you end-up with, as the GREATER the angle (as seen with the '40 Ford shown below), the less-effective the shock's dampening will be. The thing to remember with this example is that a '37 and a '40 both have essentially the same chassis AND rear end dimensions.

Ideally, the farther INBOARD that the BOTTOM of the shock mounts on the axle, and the farther OUTBOARD that the TOP of the shock mounts will make for a more-efficient shock angle. DD
