Distributor shaft removal I couldn’t find anything in the red book for this.
With the oil pan removed how is the distributor shaft removed? I’m guessing it’s tapped from up above and pushed down. Not sure though:confused: |
Re: Distributor shaft removal Are you are asking about the oil pump distributor drive gear? You have to take the valve cover off and remove the spring to get the drive out.

Re: Distributor shaft removal If the lower distributor shaft is stuck, same attack from the valve chamber. Long nose vice grips and a hammer. If the tang is broke pull and rebuild the driver.

Re: Distributor shaft removal Two piece distributor shaft?
Remove distributor, I than have used a large flat head screw driver, pushed down on the lower shaft piece. Screw driver fits into shaft slot, sometimes I have put a little heavy grease on the screw driver blade to allow the shaft to stick. That has allowed me to remove the second shaft. If rusted together at oil pump, than this will not work. Enjoy. |
Re: Distributor shaft removal Sorry for not being a little more descriptive.
Yes, I have the distributor out, the valve cover off and the spring is in place. I was able to get the shaft pulled back up the distributor hole. |
Re: Distributor shaft removal The lower distributor shaft has to come up through the top. The distributor drive comes out the side after the spring is removed but can sometimes be a pretty tight fit to get it to tip out due to the drive sleeve fit in the lower bore of the tappet galley. It will come out though since that's the only way it will go in or out.
If your shaft coupling fits (blade & slot) are crusted up, it can be difficult to get them apart. Patience and penetrant are your friends here. |
