Help in identifying a Columbia 2 speed rear
 

Can anyone identify year range of this unit based on the photos enclosed. I believe the ears where the radius arms mount may determine the years. Been in storage for many years-previous owner(deceased) did have a 39 Coupe at one time. It is strictly a vacuum unit-no electrical switch. Any help appreciated.

Based on what appears to be a mounting stud for a track bar, i would say it is for a '42-'48.

im thinking 1946-48 due to sway bar stud im not an expert on columbia rears

Hopefully you have access to the rest of the major components that go with it on the inside. There appears to be a lot of rust in the unit, so beware!

The cast iron housing should have a brass tag on the flange for the bolts clean it off and it will tell you the years.

If you are looking for a certain year? All Columbia internals are interchangeable with all years. The only difference between the years are the axle housings and axles lengths. You can use any year Columbia by modifying the axle housing. Columbia Two Speed Parts http://www.columbiatwospeedparts.com can do the modification for you. You will need a right axle housing for the year you need and a Columbia axle housing. They cut the axle housings and weld them together and it will look like an OEM part.

If you wanted to use it in an earlier car, say 1940, you could get 1940 axle housings and axles (verifyiing the 4 spider gears have the same number of teeth) and it would work if you have all the rest of the parts.

The spring hanger does look the the double barrel 1941. The housing length will tell if there is no tag. The 42/48 are longer. The 41 is the same length as earlier Fords but it has the different spring hangers.

Late 46 through 48. The housing has the larger diameter after the shift section, that then necks down out towards the end of the tube.
Also, while internals for 35-48 can be interchanged, some of the parts must be swapped as assemblies. The shifter unit pictured has the late higher outer tooth count on the A-32 (part of the synchro clutch).

The 41 has a spike hanging from the spring eye. Only year for that.

41 does have that spike, but the pictured housing doesn't.
The pictured housing has the stud for the sway bar, 41 doesn't.
