30 roadster motor woes

ran a week ago but poorly fixed fuel..fixed electric..today spun over faster than usual ..so i checked compresion ..zero on all cylinders ..piston going up and down ok ..another better idea from ford ? is timing gear stripped ? never ending battle..sc

Remove the small side cover on the timing gear cover and look at the gear as the engine turns. Probably one or more teeth broken off and the valves all stay in position they are in

Even with the timing gear stripped (most likely) it would seem that the valves on at least one cylinder would be closed. I cannot think of anything that would cause zero compression on all 4 cylinders on a previously running engine.

Besides taking the side cover off, you can peek inside the spark plug holes to see if the valves are opening and closing.

Or check to see if the rotor in the distributor is turning.

Re: 30 roadster motor woes

update.. timing gear is OK.rotor is strong and OK....think I figured out whats going on..when it came starting time the old feller always shot starting fluid in the carb ,lots of it ....so I thinking it washed all lube off valve stems and they stuck open..ha ha always something new..guess Ford is OK after all..any suggestions how best to lube them back up ??sc thinking about diesel in cyls. and turm motor over ?

Corn mix gasoline can do that also. Squirt Marvel Mystery oil on the valve stems. Now add a few ounces to the gas tank.

Re: 30 roadster motor woes

Verify that the valves are stuck open by peeking in the spark plug holes.

MMO is a solvent and lubricant. Two-cycle oil will also help, in the gas tank after the valves are freed. You may have to take the valve spring chamber cover off to get the valves to start working again.

As you know, when cold, a properly working Model A will only need one turn of the crank with the choke on to start. The GAV should be open one turn. Some instruction may be needed for the owner.

Starting fluid is not your friend, and should only be used sparingly.

Re: 30 roadster motor woes

Yep, I agree. If that many valves are hung open then the side may have to come off. The manifolds don't have to be removed. The valve stems can be squirted and carefully pulled down while being rotated. A lot of turning the engine over and squirting may be needed.
Then as said, 2 cycle oil in the fuel helps afterward.

Three things that should be thrown out the door. Electrical tape, RTV, and starting fluid.
