Engine Date for Tubman

1 Attachment(s)
I was able to get part of the date code on the truck engine I brought home.
S 4 and the no other letter, after that a box with a 1 inside. I assume Oct. 10th would be correct, not knowing the year.
Is it possible the box containing the 1 a rebuilders mark? I live about 50 miles south of Jasper In. Jasper Engines rebuilt many engines that were sold in our area, not saying this is a Jasper engine. After research, I was unable to find any company mark with a box with the 1.

You have to consider that not all engines had date codes.
This is an example of what it should look like.

Re: Engine Date for Tubman

Just because nobody's posted it lately :

The format is "Letter" (month), "Number" (day of month), "Letter" (year). The letter code is M=0, G=1, B=2, L=3, A=4, C=5, K=6, H=7, T=8, R=9, S=10, E=11, F=12.

G 20 B would be an engine manufactured on January 20, 1952.

Again, these numbers were not on earlier engines, not even on all 8BA's.

I am not able to get a clear photo of the date code,
Engine has stamped S 4 no second letter visible, and the number 1 inside a line box.
S=OCT 4th
What does the number inside the box indicate, If anything?

Most of the 8BAs floating around Texas do not have any codes. The only differences in 8BA type engines from new is how many valve seat inserts the block has and what parts are bolted on the block.

If there is no second letter, all information says it is not a date code.
The number in a box has no known meaning that I know of.
Assuming that it is an (8BA series truck engine), it could be a '47 to '53 build.
The time frame can be narrowed down a little by the components bolted to it and the parts that are in it. For example the head in the picture shows that it has oil filter bosses cast into it. This tells me '50 or newer.
Just accept that you have an engine that has no date code (not unusual and in most cases, meaningless )

Re: Engine Date for Tubman

My only point was that the engine probably was not a '49 as stated in the original post. I agree that it's not that important, but some times I like to pick nits. The engine in my '51 was date-coded to June of '51, which fits nicely with the July assembly date, which I thought was kinda cool.

Where in original post was anything stated about a '49 engine ?

I should have said "original thread", not "original post".

See here : https://www.fordbarn.com/forum/showthread.php?t=307127.

Sorry for the confusion.

It really is not important what year the engine was manufactured; I like the treasure hunt to find out as much as possible about what I have.
The post that mentions about different parts on the engine are very information and sometimes new information for me. I have learned new things about all engines. Thanks, Barners
