51 Ford Custom restoration advice? 1 Attachment(s)
Hello and thank you in advance. I am the grateful custodian of my late grandfather's 1951 Ford Coupe, filled with many memories and stories. I even have the original bill of sale and license plate. I am not experienced with automotive rebuilds, but I really want to get this timepiece on the road again at top performance where it belongs. It hasn't run since roughly 1980. Everything on it is original. I would be grateful for any advice on how to identify a competent and trustworthy garage to return this beauty to service.

Re: 51 Ford Custom restoration advice? That's a great looking '51. You are a very lucky person to have it along with the fact that it was your grandfathers. I believe tho it is a custom deluxe tudor not a coupe. There were 317,869 of them built. Good luck with it and drive it with pride!!

Re: 51 Ford Custom restoration advice? To be precise, it is a Custom Tudor sedan, as the coupes had shorter roofs, and swing out rear side windows without the faux quarter windows (sedans had roll-down rear side windows). Custom DeLuxe was dropped in '51 in favor of just plain Custom.
I don't see where you are located. That will affect a lot of things, particularly the kind of rust problems you will have to deal with. Also, you will want a shop close by, as transportation is getting real expensive these days, and it is a good idea to be able to stop by every now and then to make sure the shop is making proper progress. I see your car has an outside visor, which looks exactly like the one on my car. Could you check the invoice and see if the visor is on it? Mine was installed at the dealership and is listed on the invoice as a separate item for $17.50. It looks like a nice car, and I hope you get half the enjoyment out of it that I have from my '51. BTW, does it have Overdrive? |

Re: 51 Ford Custom restoration advice? Nice car! How does it look now?
My 51 custom fordor also has the same visor, as well as the window vent shades |
Re: 51 Ford Custom restoration advice? Very nice! My grandfather also bought a 51 custom tudor new. It sadly rusted away, but the seats were always covered and I now have them in my deluxe Tudor! ‘Three generations of Henry asses sat here’
