Do mufflers work with the flow reversed? I read a bit on three chambered mufflers and they talked about sounds bouncing back and canceling the others out. It was a bit too much for me to digest. So, if I install a muffler backwards, what will happen? Thanks!

Re: Do mufflers work with the flow reversed? Don't run chambered mufflers backwards. That would be a flow nightmare.
You can run traditional glass pack mufflers backwards. The ones you can see through. There is a slight flow difference from what I recall..... |
Re: Do mufflers work with the flow reversed? In JWL's book. He goes into detail on the effects of stock and modifies exhaust systems have on performance . One example: Dual exhaust has no effect on performance over stock. and there is more.

Re: Do mufflers work with the flow reversed? Funny, it has been well documented what happens when you play a beatles record or a country music record backwards. Maybe someone will record a backwards muffler and we can all chime in.

Re: Do mufflers work with the flow reversed? The person who built my avatar motor at sometime in the past found that Fenton cast headers made less HP then stock exhaust manifolds on the Dyno. Which points to the fact that flatheads have terrible breathing problems and most of what you do may or may not help. On my avatar engine he built nice equal length headers to fit the 32 frame and I really have no idea if they make any difference. Didn't Dyno it with different exhaust. The car is quite responsive though. I think his proprietary cam grinds have more to do with the performance then anything. He has the cam lobes ground at 114 degrees instead of 110. Flatheads don't like overlap.
I think there are pictures of the exhaust system in the album of 32 roadster pictures. Stainless steel tubing with Edelbrock Stainless mufflers. |
Re: Do mufflers work with the flow reversed? When you try it let us know how it goes.......it will depend on the muffler design....most are proprietary technology, but some are not. Some are straight through with the baffles oriented toward the front to catch the flow/noise. Installed backwards they should make the exhaust sound louder since the baffles will have little/no effect. chambered mufflers will flow in reverse, but might be less efficient at higher RPMs.

Re: Do mufflers work with the flow reversed? Most manufacture's have a spec. sheet for each style muffler they make, and most will tell you if it is 'reversable" or not. Should be able to find the info you need online.
