Hood Corners. I want to install leather hood corner protectors on my 31 A. Is there an easy way to rivet these on or a special tool to use. I can't see using a regular rivet tool without damaging the new paint on the hood. Do I have to take the hood off the car?

Re: Hood Corners. I think these are a split rivet. It is pretty easy to put it through the hole and bend the tabs over without destroying the paint. Hood sides off, would be really easy, but it can be done with the hood on.

Re: Hood Corners. I used threaded 'rivets' on mine. Unless you show your car these are much more user friendly.

Re: Hood Corners. Before you rivet the hood corner please understand, the leather just doesn’t slip over the corner and is riveted. There is a special way it is folded and then riveted. Most leathers are installed wrong. Do it right and most people will think you did it wrong.

Re: Hood Corners. I want to install them as well, I purchased them from Snyders and their instructions indicate folding ,them and the hole they have does not line up with the hole in the hood. I can punch a new hole but I must be missing something.
Anyone install the Snyder ones? |
Re: Hood Corners. When I riveted my new leather hood-corners, I used this brake lining rivet tool sold through Brattons. It comes with several different rivet setting tools and one of them (the one shown in the middle of the below picture) worked perfectly for the leather hood-corner rivets. It is totally portable (the size of your hand) and thus no need to remove the hood from your car.

Re: Hood Corners. Ok, here is the scoop. Go to spruceaircraft.com Search rivet Scroll a page or two and you will come to a rivet tool for 46 dollars and change. I know a little pricey but I have driven thousands of rivets with this tool. It won’t harm your paint and is easy to use. Maybe hunt around and you will find it cheaper. At least now you will know what a good rivet tool looks like. Now go to Brattons.com and search part 22220. Up pops the leather hood corner. Tap on the picture, tap on the green bar, up come the directions. Good venders supply directions. I guess that is why they call Bratton’s the poor mans Judging Standards.

Re: Hood Corners. OK I also have a set of leather corners and the directions do say to refold and rivit but as travlier said the simi punched hole doesn't match up and the fold doesn't seem to come out correct,what are we missing.

Re: Hood Corners. OK. Just finished mine. I took the easy route and used short 6-32 machine screws and nuts with small flat washes and lock washers. Painted them flat black and I don't think anyone but a judge will ever notice. I didn't want to take a chance on scratching my new paint job by slipping with a rivet tool. As far as the fold goes, I just took the leather corner between my thumb and finger and squeezed which made the seam end up in approximately the center of one side which I put on the back of the hood. Punched a couple of holes with an awl, and installed the screws and done. Thanks to everyone for their help. Now if there was just a site this good that could help me with brake adjusters on my 1950 Fargo, I'd be really happy.
