I had to replace the wheel on our 29. Tried painting wheel, after a few years it don’t look right.

Your wheels Bakelite is breaking down.

Is the wheel cracked?

I would replace the wheel. Not a big job.

That will take care of your two problems. Cracks and black rubbing off.

Enjoy.

Jerry Google Bakelite restoration, I just did and if your wheels not too cracked I would use some rubbing compound and then polish

Re: Steering Wheel

I used epoxy to fill cracks, sanded, then paint.. Some of your black residue may have been a dirty wheel surface.

Re: Steering Wheel

The rubber compound absorbs moisture and rubs off onto clothing, and the only fix for this I know of is to put a cover on the wheel. I painted the original steering wheel in my 1931 Coupe in 1979, and in a year or two of driving the Coupe very often, the paint started to flake off.
