1942 Ford Super Deluxe Door Handle Escutcheon

I have a 1942 Ford Super Deluxe that my family has owned since new. The escutcheon around the front door handle broke, and I am looking for a replacement. My problem is that all the replacements that I have been able to find are 1/8" or more thicker than the original part.

It is impossible to get the pin into the hole, even with the spring compressed all the way. Unfortunately this is not a matter of installation technique.

I would like to continue to use the original door handles, but that may not be an option.

Any advice or assistance would be very much appreciated.

Thank you.

Thank you.

1942 Ford Inside Handles. Does this picture show the part that you are chasing?

The reproduction escutcheons are about 1/8" thicker. I had an even harder job replacing them on my '46 Station Wagon because the interior panel is wood and has no give at all. What I did is a fair amount of work but this is what I did. If you look at the back of the escutcheon there are 4 holes. If you bend back the four tabs that hold the stainless to the plastic you can get it apart. I then removed about 1/8" from the stainless with a die grinder and files and shorten the tabs an equal amount and re-assemble. It makes the pin easy to install.

Thank you for the replies above. I have been looking for a similar one on Ebay for 3 years and have seen nothing so far (duh). Unfortunately mine are quite different from those available from Dennis Carpenter et al. They are chrome, and I may have to change all the doors to match the one that failed. It looks like I will have to work on my metal fabrication skills. I will try to post a picture.

Thank you again for the input. Mercman from OZ's restoration looks superb. I have a long way to go to get to that standard!

Bob Drake has the "universal" chrome escutcheon that fits '32 to '48, PN, B-7022618-U but again, it's a reproduction and might have to be modified to fit.

Did you try it without the spring? On my 39 there was no way I could get pin in with spring. Aftermarket escutcheons. Without the spring they are fine and was still a battle to get the pin in.

On my '46 the spring is wound so it will compress into itself, so it's not an issue. It is the stainless ring that is too fat. If you match it up with a stock stainless ring, the reproduction is about .100, (apx. 7/64") thicker. I'm not familiar with the '39 dimensions as Mark posted.

I just got back from HERSHEY and if you still need the escutcheons I saw that Mark's Ford Parts, 607-729-1693 has N.O.S. escutcheons.
