1946 Mercury Coupe Trunk Seal Replacement
 

So at a recent event discovered the trunk seal not quite tight enough as plenty water into trunk area.( called boot by us down under.
Received a new one piece seal NEW 1941-48 Ford / Mercury coupe trunk lid seal with bonded corners 11A-7243720.
The is a Dennis Carpenter seal.
Seal as fitted is fitted to body side of car into groove.
However a couple of questions please;
1: Supplied seal removed from bag and twisted etc. How to get twists and kinks from seal and get it nice and flat prior to fitting.
2: Supplied info sheet tells to fit seal to " trunk lid" and not as already fitted to body side. Fit to trunk lid starting at lock area at bottom and work around.
Easy way would be to refit to body side as already fitted.
Thoughts please.

I googled the P/N thru Steele Rubber and it says "The seal mounts around the full perimeter of the trunk directly to the body".

Yes I looked at Steele Rubber site and also noted that. So maybe fit to trunk around this area and forget trying to attach to trunk lid. As if done this way if alignment not correct would not seal too well.

Put on my 48, goes on the body, lay it out in the sun for a little while you will than be able to

Yep just that supplied instruction stated fit to lid. But will fit to body.
So to expose the seal which is in one piece to the sun and then should warm and take its flat state ready for fitting.
the said seal being a one piece with square corners should not require any cutting.

Phil definitely not to the lid. I used a Drake one piece and it is great. Glued it to the grove around the boot/trunk opening with the flap bit pulled over the lip (doesn't sound too good does it). Don't know if your seal came with clips that secure the corners. I had some for mine but did not use them.

Nope didnt come with clips. does it matter where to start fitting and gluing given its a one piece unit?

I'd glue the top corners first. I held mine with cloths pins. glue in short sections and work around. If you use 3M weatherstripping adhesive , coat seal and body, let dry, lightly recoat one and make contact. It should bond immediately

Phil like fordor 41 says. It should have corners which will guide where to position it and I used the 3M weatherstrip glue as well.

After the corners are glued I put masking tape on the body, along side of the seal and put chalk marks about every 4" or so on the seal and a mark on the tape to match. Now when you start gluing you can tell if you're stretching the seal or not. If you stretch the seal you'll end up with a bunch at he last glue position

Good point re location markings to ensure seal is not being stretched.
