Main drive gear

Hi,
On the main drive gear on transmission l noticed some play movement is this normal ?
Would the ball bearing be worn?
Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Steve

Re: Main drive gear

A little bit of play is normal. Even new ones have a slight movement to them. Look at the bearings to see if you see any wear on them, or any pits. If you are thinking of replacing them, this is sure the time to do so. Another critical piece is how the end of the shaft looks and fits into the flywheel pilot bearing. That is the section that stabilizes the whole shaft. If the end of the shaft is worn, or the pilot bearing is, then it allows it to wobble when installed. It should be a nice smooth fit.

Re: Main drive gear

Thanks for the information l pulled off bearing retainer on main drive gear slid off drive and to check bearings and scratch my head there was no main drive shaft bearing.
May be why it was a bit loose.
The main drive gear ball bearing look good.
I place end of main drive gear into flywheel pilot bearing seemed not to bad.
I ordered a new main drive bearing and another pilot bearing to test fit.
Replacing throw out bearing also.
My main concern is how long A was driven without bearing the transmission gears looked good no broken teeth etc.
The end of drive shaft does not look out of round.
Hopefully will work out.
Thanks again

Are you sure that it didn't fall off inside the transmission?
