I want to change the grease fitting on my '30 to the screw in type. What size tap do I use?

Drill 21/64 and use 1/8" pipe tap

1/8" NPT is pretty big, maybe 1/16" NPT, or 1/4-28. Check the thread pitch on the zerks.

I agree that 1/8 pipe looks pretty big, but if you use off-the-rack 1/8" grease fittings, that is what you need--at least that is what I need on my car.

It seems like a lot of work for little gain, and maybe some detriment. An adaptor for your modern grease gun is available, and your original gun won't work well on new zerks.

I use/change to 1/4-28 fittings.

my vote is for the original fittings and the grease gun adapter.
I tried it the other way and went back.....

Dick, I am unsure what your motives are, but many Model-A vendors sell a modern grease fitting set that is 'sans' the threads so you can use them in original-style unthreaded areas yet still have the modern Zerk attachment. This IMO would be much easier to do over drilling, threading with a starting tap, then using a bottoming tap, ...and eliminating the risk of breaking a tap in many difficult areas.

So, what is the consensus for Model A zerk fittings: 1/8" NPT or 1/16" NPT or 14-28"? I am specifically interested in the brass zerk size that fits on the back of the water pump. This is the one with the removable cover. I only want to buy ONE tap, not three. :)

When I got my AA truck. I was surprised to see the old style fittings and didn't understand the differences. After a front to rear inspection, I noticed that a few zerks were gone and ordered original zerks for the AA truck. I saw they were press-in fittings but no grip nipple for the grease gun to grab on to. I already had a needle point adapter from my Legacy grease fitting kit, so I can use this on any type of zerk fitting with the same gun. Just push in on the little ball and pump. TSC also carries these needle or pin-point grease adapters I noticed. Made it easy for me.

It’s my understanding that the originals have no ball and won’t keep grit and debris out. I have nothing against original and actually prefer it but I don’t like the idea of no seal.
Thinking more of those on the suspension and brakes.

I have the end for the original type screwed onto the hose of a pistol grip grease gun.That one is dedicated to the A's.It WILL put grease into the modern type if you hold it tight and square on the fittings.I also have a needle screwed directly onto the hose of another pistol grip gun.That gun was intended to grease the fittings in the double joints in the front driveshafts of 4X4 trucks.Good for regular U-joints in vehicles too.
