shock talk

1st. My 29 roadster has the dog bone shocks on all 4 wheels. These shocks are worn out, Bad metal and bad rubber balls. I'd like to replace them with original type shocks. I understand from reading past threads that Stipe are pretty much the best ones. If you have other thoughts, please tell me where you got the ones you think are equal to or better.

2nd. Tell me how the ride of my car will improve with good shocks. Again, I want the original type. Right now there is lots of rough bouncing. I will appreciate your thoughts, Regards, Bill

Dogbone describes the linkage, not the shock. Dogbones were often used on original shocks because the original type links had a tendency to come off in rough road conditions. What are your shocks? A photo would help.
Yes on Stipes. They’re the best.

Shocks help, good shocks really help.

I don't have an issue with dog bones, they are easy

Standard links may be more original, but can make you say some naughty words.

As for new shocks I think Stipe's are the best.

A good rebuilt can be good as long as the shock was in pretty good shape to begin with.

If you have properly working springs your car will not be safe to drive over about 20 to 25 MPH. You will feel like the car is going to bounce off the road.

If you do not have shocks and the car is ok to drive at 45 then your springs are bad.

I will also say a good front spring in particular makes a huge difference.

This is based on my brothers coupe. I was resealing the shocks and took it out for a test drive. He came back and would not take it out until the shocks were back on it.

I rebuilt the springs on my 30 fordor. I did not have shocks built for it yet. It handled sort of ok, but the brakes were not so good too. Just got the car and was driving it some.

Rebuilt the front and rear springs as well as the brakes.

Took it for one drive and parked until I could build up shocks. Scary to drive without them.
