36 water pumps
 

fellas, i want to grease my pumps and have some John Deere cornhead grease. It says high pressure. Is it okay for the pumps? Terry

I believe they made a special water pump grease back in the day, didn't they?

Hi Terry, High pressure ? ,just be aware that you can crack the casting on the pump due to the hidraulice action of a pressure gun , ,the guns that came with these old cars was a low pressure deal .You most likely know but you need to run the belt a little loose to save the bushes but not to loose otherwise you can run hot due to the fan slipping .Also over greasing can end up with some in the Radiator that would require a solvent or W soda to flush it out , I just did mine using Diesel , Ted

Must use a low melting point grease so that if the grease gets past the pump seals then it will melt in the hot coolant and wont block up the radiator tubes. Just one pump from the grease gun is enough grease in the pump housings so that you dont crack the pump housing or force grease past the pump seals. The new improved pumps with modern impellers and sealed bearings work very well with no greasing required. Dont have that big belt too tight because it wears out pump and generator bearings if its tighter than specs. Regards, Kevin.

JD Cornhead grease is a low melt grease. Semi-liquid grease. In my opinion it's fine for this application.

I use JDCHG in my '35 fordor sedan steering box, universal joint, and water pumps. Works very well.

thanks for the suggestions. I'll use the cornhead grease and keep your precautions in mind. The pumps have been rebuilt by Skip but i can't remember if that included sealed bearings. The pumps still have the grease fittings on them. These pumps, by the way, have worked real well for me. Terry

Skip recommends cheap lubricating grease with a low melting point.
The grease melts as the engine gets warm and gives a good lube job.
And solidifies as it cools, thick grease don't leak. G.M.
