Crankshaft pulley cross member clearance 1 Attachment(s)
I'm installing a 39-41 59A engine in my 35 PU. The clearance between the ubolts on the front spring and the crankshaft pulley is zero and will certainly be an issue. Is there a best way to correct the problem ?.

Re: Crankshaft pulley cross member clearance When I put a '48 Merc in my '35 coupe, I added two of those big thick washers between the motor mount and rubber biscuit. That got me 1/4" clearance and left enough threads to tighten the motor mount bolts. Might make the bottom water hoses go on a little easier too.

Re: Crankshaft pulley cross member clearance I put spacers under the engine mounts until the crank was in the centre of the crank handle guide.
this is on a 33, but needed the spacers Lawrie |
Re: Crankshaft pulley cross member clearance 3 Attachment(s)
Don't these years require the spaces? Do the holes line up between the water pumps and the frame/crossmember? Not familiar with 35, but I know the 33/34s need them.
Edited: This is not correct for 35, major frame change between 34 and 35 frame and front crossmember. From the photo posted in the OP, it looks like it would only require a smaller spacer and not the U type. |
Re: Crankshaft pulley cross member clearance As Stated big thick washers between the motor mount and rubber biscuit, its what Ive done for a little more room. Its going to be interesting in a few days when I try and install the engine with the gearbox still in the pickup, not a lot of room at the front to play with ..

Re: Crankshaft pulley cross member clearance Jakno, I have no answer to your motor mount question, but in referencing your engine, you should know that the block itself is a 59 series, produced from 1945 till 1948. I cannot see your heads, which may well be identified as 59A which were also produced from 1945 till 1948, not 39-41.The Crab type distributor is of vintage 1942 till 1945.

Re: Crankshaft pulley cross member clearance Rob, make some guide studs to screw into the block and then its an easy job to line up the trans, I put a trolley jack under the trans as well .

Re: Crankshaft pulley cross member clearance 'trolley jack', that a downunder term?:D

The guide studs would have to be quite long ?you have a picture of yours/ length.. |
Re: Crankshaft pulley cross member clearance just about 40-50 mm.if you make them too long you cant get the eng lined up as you won't have enough room to get it at the right angle.
We are off to the Rocky nats in the morning in the 33 and c/van Lawrie |
Re: Crankshaft pulley cross member clearance Cheers , have a good trip!

Re: Crankshaft pulley cross member clearance Yep its a floor jack fellas!
Interestingly enough it depends upon where you come from too within Australia and New Zealand. Locally we call them floor jacks too. Dave h |
Re: Crankshaft pulley cross member clearance USA/Aust/NZ
Floor jack = trolley jack Hood = bonnet Trunk = boot Wrist pin = gudgeon pin Fanny = you don't want to know. |
Re: Crankshaft pulley cross member clearance We call 'em trolley jacks here in England too. Never floor jack.
Re the original question, It is (as said) a simple matter of spacing things up until they clear. Hopefully this can be achieved without running out of thread on the bolts. You will have to improvise. What this does mean is that the engine mount pads in the 35 must be lower than a 40 because the engine in my 41 pickup fits fine without any extra spacers. It might be that your engine mounts may be a little flat/tired which if so, wouldn't help. Mart. |
