rear axle bearing lube

Do not want to over or under grease rear bearing. The bearings are new and hand packed 2000 miles ago. Would like some thoughts on this.

Add one or two pumps per side now and it will be fine if it was completely hand packed 2k miles ago.

did you pack the bearings with the proper grease--such as crc sta lube 3131?. just cleaned out a 29 rear axle some one pumped grease into the fitting on bottom of end of housing--all they did was fill up the housing NONE went to the bearing. If you packed the bearings with regular grease then repack with correct grease

Many folks don't like using the grease fitting. Those fittings do tend to plug up with 'crap' [technical term] over the years. I get concerned about pumping that 'crap' into the housing if they haven't been cleaned, but, then, for the little amount of crap thats in there I don't think the bearing worries about that at all.
I'm with Brent about those fittings, I don't have a problem using them as long as too much grease isn't used.

Your best bet is to hand pack the bearings. Pull the drums off and pack them. A few years after the Model A went out of production Ford discontinued the grease fittings for the real axle wheel bearings on the V8's and recommended hand packing.

Most Model A's on the road today have the rear axle grease seals shot and when you pump grease in through the grease fittings the grease is not directed toward the bearings but travels down the axle shaft and the more you pump in the more it centrifuges around the shaft and travels toward the differential.

A bigger disincentive to re-packing the rear bearings is the difficulty of removing the hubs. Last time I tried it took three days with a puller and then heat, before it eventually came off with a very loud bang!

This is the puller that worked for me.
