Re: Lug nut Where did the term "lug nut" come from, or for that matter, spare tire? Why is it not a wheel nut and a spare wheel?
Originally the tires had to be changed on the car. Nothing was demountable. If you got a flat, you jacked up the car, pried off the tire enough to get the tube out, and patched the tube. You then blew up the tire with a hand tire pump. Tires were not very good and didn't last long so you carried one or more spare tires. Along came demountable rims that were attached with lugs, and the lugs were attached with lug nuts. The spare rims had the tires already mounted on them but were still called spare tires. They along came spare wheels with tires already mounted. Still called spare tires and the nut were still called lug nuts. My grandfather told a story of driving his Maxwell from LA to San Diego and getting a flat. He was out of patches so he filled the tire with straw from a field and drove home. My grandfather, the Maxwell, and the field along the highway 1 from LA to San Diego are long gone. |
