South Wind Heatew
 

I am looking for instructions for activating the South Wind heater in my 39 Pickup. The heater is installed and the part protrudes through the firewall. A friend provided me with a jet tube but it needs to be installed. I believe a hole must be drilled in the lid of the float chamber on the Model 94 carb to provide a fuel source through the capillary tube. I am unsure about where to drill and how to make the connections to the firewall fitting. I am rebuilding the carb and have the plate that goes under it to provide the vacuum source.
Any kindness in helping me is greatly appreciated.
I am considering selling the Dodge Ram and using this one as my only truck when restoration is complete so it will need a heater and later A/C if there is such a modification.

The 41 Chevy I drove in HS had a SouthWind. Loved that heater!

The topic is very appropriate for me. I've posted before about my concern of using the Southwind heater in my '34 Ford.
My aunt gave me the car 50 years ago. Over the years I've used the heater many times. It has always worked wonderfully. The concern I have is that I haven't used it for at least 15 years, maybe more. The other day I was out for a cruise and it was a chilly morning. I debated as to whether or not I should put the heat on. I decided against it.
One of these days I'll try it. The video shows the safety devices built into it and members on this board have stated that its quite safe. I think my biggest concern at this point is whether or not the fan would still be working.

My senior year is HS was a cold winter. The SouthWind made life better! Sure missed it when was working and had money to purchase a new 67 Mustang that I had to wait for the engine to warm up for heat!

Well J. Seery that was a great video. Says it all. Now I see where the carb float bowl lid is drilled to accept the suction line from the jet tube. I am thinking about hiding a 12 volt battery somewhere and using it to power a hair driver for the defroster. At 1200 watts however, it might not last too long.

I have never heard a ticking noise from a SW igniter.
The igniter is actually a glow plug and has no moving parts. If your heater is used you may have to take it apart and clean it. SW heaters have a way of "growing" a white dust in them which may block the on off valve passage or the flow of vapor gas thru the heater. Note that there is no way for exhaust gas to leak into the car because the instant the vacuum seal anywhere is broken the heater stops pulling gas and does not work.
