Side Mirror Installation Question
 

I ordered side mirrors so I don't inadvertently crush my fenders while backing blindly into the garage. They did arrive, but before I made mistakes, I wanted to get advice on how to remove the pin in the hinge, and install the new mirror and pin. I've included pictures of the current hinge, and the new mirror for reference. Can't believe with some of these suppliers that they don't include references or installation instructions on parts that they sell.

I installed what looks like the exact mirror you have. Drivers side. I was able to remove the pin after some oil soak/tapping pin from bottom. So, pick the oil of choice & let it sit for awhile & see how tough it's stuck. Hopefully it'll tap right out.

They make a pin removal tool, but I have always been able to drill them out if stuck too bad. Just have to be carefull

I find that the door hinge pins wear and become groved as shown in the exaggerated sketch. To date, I have used a rivet gun with a pointed bit to jack hammer the pins out. However, I would much prefer to use a controlled force tool to press the pins out.
To mount a hinge mirror, I replace the hinge pin with a bolt that protrudes about 0.38" above & below the hinge. The bolt head is cutoff, and the head end threaded to match the existing bolt threads. Open the holes in the mirror to suite the bolt. Mount the mirror using the custom bolt and hex nuts on each end. Use blue thread locker. Cover the hex nuts with chrome acorn nut covers.

Excellent sketch, Bob. I bet a lot of people fighting with the pin don't even consider the pin hanging up due to wear.

Good news - success! I used a punch after soaking the hinge in PB Blaster all night. It came out in one piece with no issue. It was a little bit of a challenge mounting the new (aligning the new bolt with the hinge) but with a little lithium grease it went in. Next will be the drivers side. Thanks for all the suggestions.

Good going. Just a small tip. I installed a 5" mirror head instead of the standard 4". Gives you a better view of where you have been... :p:p You wouldn't think 1" bigger would make much difference but it really helped me when backing up.

Before attempting a job like this confirm what diameter hinge pin you are dealing with. There are 9/32 pins for the slant windshield and I believe '31 Cabriolet and Victoria. Also there are replacement oversize pins for the 1/4 inch pins. The 5 inch mirrors are supplied with 1/4 bolt pins and are somewhat loose in the doors. I mounted those 5 inch mirrors on a members slant and turned up 9/32 diameter pins tapped at each end to 8-32 thread. Pins were sized exact length of door hinge plus .010. Threaded into hinge pins 8-32 set screw and then placed short 1/4 -20 short studs down into mirror ends and threaded on acorn nuts supplied with mirror.

Are you able to actually use your passengner-side mirror? If so, and mine is a PicUp, what's that part-numbers?

Here is a picture of the tool to get existing hing pin out, it also has different size pins that you will need to push out existing hinge pin. I picked it up at the early Ford store in San Dimas Ca. earlyfordstore.com

I too installed the 5" mirror head, it makes a huge difference for side and rear vision. No one notices the change.

I've been searching for a 5" convex mirror. I went to a 4" convex and I am pleased that it expands my field of view, but I would like to go bigger. Does anyone have a lead on t 5" convex?

I had that problem, the mounting stud on the mirror was too short. I replaced both mirrors w/5" convex that had longer studs, allowing more adjusting room.

Congrats, you are very fortunate it came out that easy. Our 29 Tudor driver side pin removal was a nightmare. Lots of heat, PB and eventual drilling.

I just mounted mirrors on my Victoria (9/32 in. pins) and when I got the mirrors, the pins supplied were wrong. I found that I had to carefully drill out the mirror bracket to receive the 9/32 pins. But a further problem was that the 9/32 pins did not fit snugly in my door hinges. I purchased coiled pins that were slightly over sized and filed them down to fit my hinges. I chucked my pins into my drill press and filled them to fit. The advantage of the coiled pins over the solid pins is that they compress slightly to assist in maintaining at good fit into the hinge. The pins were then cut to length and I used a screw and acorn nut to simulate a domed top on the hinge pin. Ed

Y-Blockhead, do you have a source for the amber cowl light lenses, would like to replace my clear lenses as the are used for turn signals and are more easily seen.
