Speedometer 1950 F3

I drove my truck today for the first time in over 30 years! It drove great! But the speedometer was bouncing all over the place and making a loud vibration noise. I remember it not be reliable before so didn't get to concerned about that. Finally it stuck at 0 and the needle is all catiwaumpus. I assume something came apart inside. Is there any repair to them? Any idea where I could find a new or used replacement? Not looking forward to taking that out...

Why not take the cable out and see if it was dry and broke.

Cable seems to be in tact at the Speedometer was. I haven't pulled the other end off yet.

definitely broke in the speedometer, may be easier/cheaper to find another than repair

You might also want to remove the speedo and lubricate it with a light oil (sewing machine oil?). The one in my 50 Custom Deluxe also bounced around (at low speeds) and made noises. There should be a place to apply oil. Mine had what looked like a wick sticking up out of an opening. Just a few drops and then I modified a nail and used a drill to turn the speedo with the nail to work it in. Run the drill counterclockwise as you face the back of the speedo.. :)

My old eyes see the needle shaft either broke or the jewel bearing failed usually caused
by the cable and casing dry that makes the needle violently bouncing. those are on
ebay all the time. cheaper to replace than to send it out and swap the odometer which
is easy.

Nice one on ebay right now for cheap....sam

How does the cable come out? Do you pull it from the tranny end? I haven't pulled that end off yet.

The cable has a threaded collar on both ends. Undo them and pull the cable out.

Every speedo cable I have pulled out is from the speedo end. I usually didn't disconnect the transmission end.

I tried pulling the cable out today but it didn't want to come. I didn't want to pull too hard and break something. I'm pulling on the speedo end I haven't tried taking the other end off yet. Is there something holding it in place?

Yes, the threaded collar.

I mean the cable inside the housing, I have the cable off the Speedometer and wanted to pull the cable out to clean and lube it.

Get in touch with Rusty at speedometer services, he may be able to help you get the cable out and can probably repair the speedometer. HRP

The cable just pulled out of my 49. My speedo did the same thing, some screws fell out. Just cleaned things and put it back together.

This is still the one I sent you. I just haven't got it put back in yet. Got the cable out tonight after taking it apart at the tranny end. It pulled out the speedo end but wouldn't come until I took it apart at the tranny. It looks ok, I sprayed it down with SeaFoam lube and left it set. I'll try to clean it up tomorrow night.
