12V conversion?
 

How difficult and expensive is the 12V conversion to do? At this point my car is completely original, so I am trying to see the scope and price of parts to do this before I decide if I should go for it.

Not too big a deal. Change all the bulbs, add voltage drops on the gauges, new 12v generator, battery, coil (depending on the current coil). 6v stater can be used, or switched to 12v. Current wiring, switches are fine.

Now, why are you wanting to switch on a stock car?

why change to 12v when 6 V works fine but you must keep up the electrical maintenance as any voltage drop is deadly but with the advent of 6volt leds the old animal of poor lighting just dosen't hold any more But in saying that i admit mine is 12v but with a sound system and electric cooling fans etc 12v that was they way to go so if you want to stay reasonably stock there is no need The choice is yours

I shared this the other day. Quick and easy way to convert a Ford 6V generator to a 12V using the guts and center case from a late 50's GM generator.

Use the Ford front and rear plates from your donor generator and you've got new generator for under $75. To have this done to your Ford generator, it's over $250.

I just learned a trick on how to make a 12V generator using the case of a mid-50's-'60's GM generator, Ford armature and end caps. It's AC Delco part # 334-1001

Rebuilt GM generator can be had from places like Summit Racing for $50. When I get to it, I'll post a how to.

Travis, there are a plethora of posts on this site regarding how to make the change.
Dash lights can be regulated with 12 volt input to a constant voltage regulator, these were common on Mustangs, (8V output) and there are several aftermarket types available.

DMMuir: You don't say what year and model your vehicle is. Do a search on "12volt conversion" and read, read ,read. Tons of info. If you have a the stock 6V OEM voltage gauge or BATT gauge in your vehicle, you will need to read this thread.

Aesthetics can be expensive, alternators are not.

[mention]JSeery [/mention] mostly for light availability, options on led turn signals etc. Thinking of going to alternator, 12v and strombergs efire ignition.
