10 spline pinion 34 v 35 difference?
 

Are there differences and how do I tell if the gear set I have just acquired will fit my 35?

If it's a 10 spline Ford from the era, it will fit. Even if it were a 6 spline, it could be made to fit with a 6/10 adapter coupling. Importantly, all Ford gear sets of the '32-'53 period are matched sets, the ring and pinion must not only be of the same ratio, but must both carry the same hand etched serial number. Mixing a ring from one set and a pinion from another can result in rapid wear.

The pinion gear bearing surface is larger on a 35-36 than a '34.In fact the 33-34 bearing surface is nearly the same dia as the od of the 10 splines. and the pinion length is a bit longer on the '35 -36.
The first pic is of a late'32 an '33-'34.The second pic is the 35 and later but happens to be a 6 spline.

Most 1935 to 1948 gear sets that are available these days are 6-spline. This is what necessitates the adapters for cars that still had 10-spline. Those early ones that came out for use with the V8 and up through 1934, had different bearings but they were a step up from the model A style axles used up into the model B era prior to the intro of the heavier duty axle assembly.

To make a 35+ pinion fit into my 34 housing, I had the OD of the later pinion gear turned down. In other words the tell tale sign that you have an earlier pinion than 1935, is that it is smaller OD.

Deuce lover has just rained on my parade. The pinion is 33-34 style. The gent I got it from did come back to me and say it might not be right but he thought he could source the correct item, so I'll go back to him.

Ya never stop learning! I didn't know of the bearing difference.


There was also something I seem to recall about a late set into an early housing may require minor surgery to the housing for clearance?

Another thing to mention as to why they are different, the center banjo housing on the 32-34 is about 3/8" narrower than the 35 and later center banjo.

They used the same center section for a long time but there were variations with the axle bells and the bearings for the differential carrier bearings in the earlier units. All this stuff can make swapping parts around a real challenge. The guys that want the Columbia ODs for earlier cars find this out pretty quick.
