Can someone ID this car ... we think it's a US made car and have had guesses.. but can anyone firmly ID?

Re: Not a Ford , but what is it? My thoughts are it is a French car late twenties . France made RHD cars in this time frame . The picture most likely taken in West Africa ,French colony maybe Ivory Coast etc etc . The building in the background is not Caribbean but very West African The people are not Muslim so you can rule out Senegal I think .Just my thoughts .

I've seen a front bumper just like that on a 1921 Stutz (see photo)
That's not to say that Stutz made that bumper, it could be that it was a popular aftermarket accessory. Many pre-1930 cars did not come from the factory with bumpers. Lincoln used a similar bumper style too, I think. |

Looks like a circa 1923 Studebaker Big Six.

DPSON was 100% correct in identifying this mystery car as a 1923 Studebaker Big Six Touring Car. Compare the two pictures. |
Re: Not a Ford , but what is it? Thank you Fordbarners.. It must definintely be a Stduebaker Big 6. and a point also for John Charlton as further info has come to light that the photo was indeed taken in either Nigeria or Benin , West Africa!

Re: Not a Ford , but what is it? I vote for Benin which was a French colony up to 1960. Large high quality USA made cars were very popular in Europe certainly in France more than England I think .About 20 years ago I was a guest at a French wedding . The bridal car was a large open car it was a Berliet . Just prior to the wedding it broke down ,missing on one cylinder . Everything was tried but no go . I was invited to help as it was known I had an interest in "old cars" . No compression so I took the valve chest door off to find a valve had lost its keeper collett .No sign of the collett which no doubt was now in the oil pan . The bridal chateau had a small workshop where I got a suitable "cut floor nail" . It was luckily the right height and width to fit the valve stem keeper slot then I cut it to length. I prised up the dished keeper retainer and got the nail in and seated and back on all cylinders . The engine looked very American to me I grew up in South Africa and elderly American cars were common . I remarked to the owner who told me the car was mostly Dodge Brothers built under licence from Dodge .The owner was very pleased and I did get to kiss the bride !!!

Re: Not a Ford , but what is it? I should explain that at one time I owned a 1924 Studebaker Light Six touring car, so had a bit of an advantage in identifying this one.

Re: Not a Ford , but what is it? Dodge was my first choice because of the disc wheels, but it wasn't quite Dodge. Then I got to the Studebaker. Having worked with a 1922 Studebaker, I, too, decided it was more of a Stude than a Dodge. Where oh where is that car today?

Same type car you see in the pics of the 1924 NYC auto show with 475,000 trouble free miles. |
