generator problem I have a 1930 pick up, older restoration, when I try to adjust the generator amp reading on my amp meter I can't get it over 0. I move the adjustable third brush down as far as it will go but no luck. Could it be the battery or a problem with the
generator. I have a spare generator but don't want to swap it if there is a likely solution. Thanks for any help, Pete |
Re: generator problem What are your voltage readings on either side of the cutout?

Re: generator problem Not being able to get the output above 0 indicates it is not charging, or the output from the generator is not able to get through the generator cutout. Several things immediately come to mind. Check the generator brushes. Check the cutout. Or you could have failed field coils. Not likely to be the battery if you are able to start the car. Also assuming that turning on the lights or blowing the horn causes the ammeter to show discharge.

Re: generator problem New cut-outs are pretty much junk. The old originals are pretty bullet-proof.
