Hood Latch Bumper Replacements

I just noticed that one of my hood latch bumpers is dried out hard and crumbling. I found these replacements online.

I presume you have to drill out the old ones. How do you install the new ones?

I drilled mine out and used small stainless bolts.

I use a C-clamp that we modified using a Tonka Rivet Tool as the foundation. If you have a Mill, you can fab one fairly easily. Otherwise, make a tubular rivet upsetting tool on a lathe. If none of those are an option, I guess you could use a small machine screw from one of the big box stores.

Do you recall where you found small stainless bolts to fit?

Sorry. I don’t have that kind of machinery. I’ll probably need to look for stainless bolts locally, but I have no clue where to look. The big box store bolts will likely rust.

Our local Ace Hardware has good S/S screws and nuts. Look for non-magnetic S/S, has less iron in it.

I did the same thing (small machine screws), also did the corner leathers, painted the heads black.

Thanks. That gives me a place to start.

Lowe's typically has Hillman line on Aisle 1 that will probably be ok to use. While I feel sure they will have stainless fasteners too, don't get overly excited about the need of using stainless. The majority of your car is not stainless, -and since you are not worried about it being authentic looking, just get whatever type of machine screws you can source locally.

I was missing one on my unrestored Victoria and I was able to work a bumper on to the original rivet by heating it and using a little grease.

I used pop rivets, but the head was to small. Maybe add a washer.

Hmmm... That seems easy enough to try.

That’s not a bad idea.

I’ll need to check what I can find locally. Thanks for the feedback.

You can order the proper tubular rivets from Mcmaster-Carr Co.

It looks like the kit in the first post had rivets.

Did you use a separate special tool to replace your bumpers?

Re: Hood Latch Bumper Replacements

You got the correct set...rivets are preferable as they will not vibrate loose and fall out. Hillman makes an excellent too to press these rivets on. You will need to get fittings to fit into the bumper...I made mine by buying steel rod at the hardware store and cutting them to size with a dremmel tool cutt off disc...then super glued them to the base piece...It took about a couple of days to the the tools, an hour or so to set it up and five minutes to press them on...
Have fun
