1951 auto trans fluid recommendations

Hi folks, looking for the recommended fluid for a 1951 Fordomatic. I know this may have come up before but I don't want to put the wrong stuff in,previous owner used Dexron. one other place recommended Dexron, another said use type F, but just want the right stuff, I have put in the Dexron and added a quart of Lucas sealer, I just want to use the right stuff before driving too far. Thanks in advance, Barry B. / Ma.

Last summer put in Dex/Merc in my my '51 Merc-o-matic. It shifts normal. Previously, I changed the fluid and put in Type F. It didn't like Type F. It shifted hard. Just my experience.

Has it been rebuilt with modern friction materials ?
Otherwise anything ford built before -67 usually takes ATF type F.

My '53 Fordomatic works great with Type F

It depends on what materials are inside the transmission. What was used in the last rebuild dictates the fluid requirements.
