Most venders offer rings in twenty thousands to one hundred and twenty five thousands . they mostly have rings that increase in sizes like 20 , 40,60,80 and so forth . Back in the day Ford offered rings in small in between sizes that often can be found on eBay . On worn cylinders I have often used the next larger ring size and filed the ring caps to the next smaller size and check for clearance at the bottom of where the rings stop in the cylinders .

my pistons are a worn .040 . Thought 050 rigs might work cylinders look good , just worn . Will 060 rings work in 040 pistons, as long as I fit the rings to the cylinders ? steve ,thanks for the info.

a little more clearance is better than a little less clearance . A too tight engine can seize .

If you're going to file-fit the rings, make sure you check at the bottom of the ring travel. Cylinders wear more at the top than bottom, so are tapered. If you fit a ring to have the correct gap at the top of the cylinder, it may butt together at the bottom. In fact, if your cylinders and pistons are bored .040" oversize, a new .040" ring may well have the proper gap out of the box.

Don't worry about some taper in the cylinders. As long as they're smooth, back in the '50's and '60's I had good results in re-ringing engines with up to .019" taper. Every mechanic had a ridge reamer and used it often. A valve and ring job at, say, 80,000 miles would be good for another 20-30,000 miles, at which point the rest of the car was shot- rusted out, upholstery gone, front end worn out, etc. That is, if the car even lasted that long!
