Need a little help. Does anybody know how to set the timing on a 1934 Ford V8?

It is built into the distributor. The points gap change the timing. It needs to be set on a fixture to really get it correct. What are the issues you are having?

The distributor rotates counterclock wise. Moving the adjuster in the opposite direction will advance the timing.

I case you get confused regarding clockwise as seen from the driver's seat versus looking at the front of the distributor, another way of putting it is: Moving the adjuster up advances and down retards.

Removing confusion when giving instructions is often a challenge.

Even when we understand perfectly well what we are trying to say, writing so that it can be clearly understood by the reader can get away from us.

When the instruction says up or down, what is being moved up or down? Is it the screw that holds the index plate? Or, the index mark on the case? Or the marks themselves?

The correct reference is very important.

Clint, you have asked a simple question, but it's hard to tell how much information you really need. Help us out with a few more details ... distributor on the engine or not, running or not ... have you ever replaced points in a '34 helmet distributor (if that is what is installed).

The guys will help but need to better know what you are trying to do.

Hoop, I replaced the points few years ago. In the last month I took the points out and cleaned them. The distributor is on the engine. The index plate and the screw moves when I loosen it up but a little hard to move.

OK. Verify which distributor you have ... original with points that are adjusted by removing plugs on case and tightening or loosening the separate point pegs like a Model A? Or later with more modern style points?

How did you set the gap, and what did you set them at?

It is normal to have to tap the index to move it.

The books says move the plate up until the motor pinks then back it till it disappears ,

With respect on Today's fuel's I Feel that would enable a engine to be too far advanced on timing..

If you have no KRW fixture or sun machine, my opinion is to set the points at .015" and set the timing adjuster one notch up. Raising the adjuster advances the timing. This will get you somewhat close. This all assumes you are using GOOD points.
