Why the roller on top of the float?

Why is there a roller on the top of Zenith floats? ...... ( I know it's useful to change the weight but what the real reason?)

It is a weight, Ford weighed the floats and added weights as needed.
Small variations in weight can make a large change in fuel level.
I have had to add these weights to some reproduction floats to get the fuel level correct.

yes, Ford Garage http://www.fordgarage.com/pages/ZenithAfloats.htm is an interesting page on floats. But it's not just weight that counts .... fuel level in the bowl will also be changed by the float dimensions being different ( a slightly wider float (displacing more fluid) - and they are not all absolutely accurate dimensions -will float higher , sealing the valve at a lower fuel level). Also the head of fuel difference between full and empty tank will change the bowl fuel level - small print I know...I'm sure dear Archimededs didn't realise we'd still be thinking about him 2000 years on.:)
