1933 door latch help

Working on a 33 tudor with the inside door handles going into the latch. My car does not have the inside remote handles. I replaced the main spring no problems there. I found broken spring parts inside the removable metal cap that holds the cam for the outer door handle. I cannot find replacement springs to go in there, the repro remote springs are obviously wrong, and I am not sure what is right to go in there. I also need the thin washers that have a square hole in the center that go in there with the latch cam. Any help, photos, diagrams, parts source, anything greatly appreciated! Thanks!

There is also a spring that goes near the handle shaft, it holds the inside handle in the lock position. Have any photos of yours?

Here is the spring Terry is referring to.Its the black one.Not easy to install without undoing the tabs that hold the handle pivot.

A note on "undoing the tabs". My experence is breaking tabs attempting to unfold them cold. I have found that heating the fold red hot will anneal them enough to not break. Then after disassembly re-heating and annealing with a hammer to straighten them while hot they will re-assemble and re-fold.

Those are the ones I bought, but they do not seem to fit anywhere. They are referred to as "remote door handle" springs. The latches cas3 and I are both working on have the inside door handle shaft coming right out of the latch assembly with NO remote handle. The broken spring was under the metal cover with the tabs that were mentioned by Karl Wescott . I will try to post some pictures.

33 had a couple of door latches with the handle shaft. Another is below. They both take two springs. I am not aware of the washers with square hole. The assembly for the outside door handle??

Ok, I can't seem to attach pictures. Terry, that looks just like mine. I also now where the spring goes at the end of the inside door handle pivot piece. I had found a piece of broken spring inside the tabbed sheetmetal cover that holds the L shaped cam that operates with the outside door handle. So, is there NO spring under that cover? Possibly broken pieces just worked down in there?

Re: 1933 door latch help

I believe the washer with the square hole is located where the outside handle goes into the latch. These two washers allow the handle to be installed by compressing the latch while inserting the handle. Once the latch is released the handle will not come out of the latch. This is to prevent someone from breaking into the car that is locked by removing the outside screws for the handle.

My experience is with the 35-36 Ford door latches, but I believe the principles are the same. I do not believe these washer parts are available except from another used latch.

Pictures of my latches, the round washer with square holes that I need to find replacements for, the spring I found under the sheetmetal cover with the replacement spring for comparison, and the cover.
On the springs, the one I found in the latch cover piece is on the bottom, the replacement part is on the top. Still would like to know if there is supposed to be any spring under that metal cover.

Re: 1933 door latch help

so, your original spring looks like the ones Terry shows, and the replacements i ordered look like the the catalog picture the deuce lover shows. should be interesting trying to reshape the spring! also, the little clippy thing in the center of the catalog photo is not being made any more according to c&g, where does that go?

Re: 1933 door latch help

Do not reshape the spring.Look at Terry's post (#7) second pic,The bracket that secures the handle shaft. You can see the black spring. Its tricky to get in.I can tell you as I have done a few over the years. It (spring)slips in and then the tail comes out the small slot. That is how the tension is maintained. The "U" part of the spring goes in the notch of the piece around the handle square.Easiest way to get it in is to peel back the 4 tabs and pull out the bracket the way Karl says and then reinstall with the spring as an assy.On the first one I did I bent the tabs cold(not the way to do it) and they all broke.I still got it all together but had to Mig weld the what was left of the broken tabs to the latch frame. If you have the proper tools you can maybe bend the spring enough to get it in.

Re: 1933 door latch help

I am not aware of any spring under the retaining cover for the square handle shaft and cam. as you say the pieces may be from the missing spring for the cam. I would take Karl Wescott's advice to replace the missing spring.

Re: 1933 door latch help

I got mine in and working. Yes, the covers had to come off. I heated them, only lost 1 tab, spot welded the slot after re-assembly. The springs are a little tricky to get in there. A big thank you everyone for the information!

About those washers, I made some out of a piece of Delrin rod. drilled a 5/16" hole, filed it square inside so it fit the handle snug, turned them the lathe into shape.

got my springs today, not in yet but i can see how they go, thanks. been fighting with window channels today, can any one tell me where this rubber bumper attaches ? C&G part # B7021580, 32-34 lower window stop bumper. one per door another vendor says, thanks also, any tips on window installation gladly accepted!

Re: 1933 door latch help

That bumper is what the window rests on when it is lowered. Look inside the door for a resting place for it. It may need a slight crimp to hold it there.
