What kind of glue for running board mat?

Im installing new rubber in my 29 Tudor,s running boards.

Some Model A parts stores sell a special glue for running board rubber matting, but it seems expensive plus with my work schedule, it is not convenient to get to during operating hours.

I was told I could use contact cement, but the rubber didn't seem to stick to it.

Is there any glue that I could buy at a local auto parts store? I hate to keep spending money on something that might not work.

Thanks in advance.
Neil

The vendors sell a mat that is pre-glued, that's what I used. See

Most contact cements I have seen require you to coat both the mat and running board following the instructions on the can. That's why it's a one shot deal, get installed right the first time. What cements have you tried?

IMHO water based contact cement is worthless IF that's what you tried. Any quality contact cement (Petroleum based) works. As post #3 states coat both sides and when it looks like it's dry it's ready. I have used both brush and spray for 50 years with no issues. You may need to use a small amount of wax and grease remover or denatured alcohol as a wipe down first. Often time talcum powder etc. is used during the manufacturing process.

If you use contact cement, be certain the mat is exactly in the proper position. Once the 2 glued sides touch each other, it’s stuck. You might position it over strips of cardboard, once the glue dries. The cardboard won’t stick to the dried contact cement, then pull the strips out a little at a time while you position the mat. Good luck.

Re: What kind of glue for running board mat?

First contact cement was from home depot.
Couldn't tell if it was water or petroleum based. Label didn't show.

I was able to get to a Model A parts store today.
Bought the Weldwood contact cement that they sell. It is petroleum based.
This time I roughed up the rubber side ahead of time.
I painted glue on both sides and clamped a piece of wood on top.
Will check results tomorrow.
Thank you all for the advice.

A lot of deicer boots use the product mentioned in post #7 (EC1300L). These boots have be able to take the high speeds of an aircraft. The stuff works very well and is easy to work with. It can be rewetted with toluene if dries out a bit too long.

I used 3M yellow glue in a spray can . I didn't take note of a part number but the glue has held the matting well over the years . I got the glue at Walmart .

Weldwood contact cement did not work. Some areas of bubbles.
Ordered 3M, 1300L.

Should the rubber be clamped down or just left to dry?

Re: What kind of glue for running board mat?

I sprayed the glue on the back side of the mat and the top dide of the metal running board . I allowed a few minutes for the glue to set up before installing the mat . If I got a wrinkle or bubble under the mat , while installing , I could fairly easily peel back the mat and re stick .

I was taught that when using contact cement to put a thin coat on each surface, let it dry, put newspaper across the lower surface, position the upper surface, then pull the newspaper out, one piece at a time, making sure that the upper surface is still in the correct position as it won't move once it contacts the lower surface.
This procedure has worked for me many times over the years.

I am incredulous at all of the information and procedures and warnings and .... when the self-sticking mat from the Model A vendors is essentially fool-proof!

Use Toulol as a solvent for EC1300L obtainable at hardware stores.

I am a third gen master carpenter, been swinging a hammer for over 40 yrs now. I have used more than my share as well as quite a few others worth of contact cement. This type of glue should be more than adequate. Both sides need to be clean. Apply a coating of glue to each surface. Let it DRY! Then put both pieces together. Job done. If youre using clamps your doing something wrong. I would not use newspaper as a slip sheet it will tend to stick to the glue. Use a couple of pieces of wood dowels, instead. The main brand we used to use was Hybond 80nf, but its an industrial product. Not sure its even still made. I have used Weldwood from HD with great success, but I would prefer the Hybond if I given a choice between the two. We use the same type of glue when adhering EPDM (rubber) roofing only its industrial use as well and typically comes in a 5 gal. jug. IF you prep correctly and apply correctly the Weldwood should be more than good enough.

Re: What kind of glue for running board mat?

You must let the contact cement, no matter the brand, dry to a "tacky" state before you place the two parts together. Contact cement will not dry if the parts are placed when it is wet, you have non-porous surfaces. Wax paper is good to use between the parts to get the alignment and then slide the paper out to the end as you press the parts together.
