Miles Per Gallon

What is the average MPG on the Model A's?

Re: Miles Per Gallon

When I kept record I got 23 mpg at 55+mph over 1500 mile trip
Locally it gets 20 with mixed parade and regular driving--10$=about 100 miles

I've never gotten more than 17.

Pull your plugs and if you see a tan color your good to go! After about 1 1/2 hours of driving Iam ready for a pit stop, driving in any car.

It sounds unbelievable but I got 24.4 once on a tour. I had just tuned it up and drove 45 to 50. Never got that before or after.

Not me
I’ve tried different carburetors and plugs never got over 18 mpg.

15-20 depending on how many hills, always drive below 50 MPH

Back in the day, a guy in our area used an A as his everyday, go to work, driver. It was in decent shape but well used and he averaged 25 miles to the Imperial gallon which equates to about 20 miles to the US gallon. A little less in the winter.

18 is about average for my Vicky, but then again we’re about a mile high here.

I won our club's economy run a few years back with nearly 31 mpg.
Before you start saying "That's BS", we used to use the Imperial gallon.
I think that converts to about 25, maybe a little less to the US gallon.

My 1931 Victoria gets about 15 in the city and about 18 on the (non-Interstate) highway.

Depends on terrain and weather, but mostly around 18 mpg.

There was an article in the Restorer magazine probably in the 70s that showed a Ford report on mpg back in 1931 I think. Anyway it matches what people above are saying with most in the upper teens as I remember. Some were higher and some real low (probably leaking carb) anyway if you get in the low 20s then you are doing things right, just don't lean out and burn the valves. Of course we drive differently now, the state wide speed limit in Virginia back in 28 was 35 MPH unless other wise posted plus our engines are bored out and things have been done to get a little more speed.

If you get high teens-low 20s you should be good. I can do almost 20 in my Fordor on hilly roads. Not bad for the heaviest Model A they made.

I only get about 14 mpg max. Not sure why. Odometer calibrated, Fresh motor, tried different carbs including a rebuilt Berts, spark plug reads good, 3.54 rear end. 16 inch tires. Since it runs perfect, am living with it.

Re: Miles Per Gallon

The first rebuild of my engine when I first restored the car only got 15 mpg, only went 52 mph, when the rear main crumbled at 3000 miles I replaced the sunken valve seats, and replaced worn original cam with a "B"cam that showed little wear, ---same distributor, carburetor, manifolds , rods, pistons head, etc,--- made all the difference, top speed went to 67,fuel mileage went over 20

18mpg

Re: Miles Per Gallon

Another factor that influences economy which is not mentioned so far is gearing. My '28 Tudor has a 3.54 diff and Mitchell 26% O/D and B engine. The end result is not good. It is comfortable at 60 mph but even if I see an incline on the horizon, it slows down. Because the motor is lugging in O/D, it guzzles fuel. I have had it as low as 13 mpg - that is not much more than 10 miles per US gallon. I'm on the lookout for a standard gear set (3.78:1)

Re: Miles Per Gallon

Over the past year 12.5 to 15.5 mpg. Car runs very well and is stock with no o/d. Drive 45 to 50 on tours. Engine is .100 overbore and operates in normal heat range.
