Anyone using the mallory centrifugal dual point distributor, on their 49/53 flathead engine,2527501 from summit ?

I looked into getting one of these and found the gear is not included and the shaft not drilled to pin the gear. For the better part of $400 you think that you would get a complete distributor. Found a rebuilt Mallory dual point with 2 piece cap for over $100 less and couldn't be happier. Got the performance plus the vintage look.

Yes,( #2527501 Series 25) I used it for a year and then installed the Mallory Unilite conversion kit #558. Modules kept burning out so last week I installed the Pertronix ML-181 igniter kit and 40001 ignition coil. It performs much better. Mine came with the gear. There is a fellow on Fordbarn (Tubman) who is making really good condensers for the dual pt. set up.
Get the one that has the correct length shaft for your timing cover. I cut mine to fit the cast iron timing cover, not the aluminum.

These usually have an SBC advance curve (total 36 degrees) when a flathead Ford (because of the combustion chamber differences) needs less (22-26 degrees). The earlier models have a plastic "Key" that you can insert into the advance plate to limit the total advance to what a flathead really needs. I have seen a couple of these over the years, and one had the adjustable advance, but one didn't. Quite frankly, I would avoid the currently available "Mallory's" like the plague. "Mallory" is in quotes for what I believe is a very good reason.

The old Mallory "flattops" for a flathead are getting hard to find and expensive. Mallory "flattops" for SBC's are on eBay for less than $100 every so often, and can easily be converted for use in a flathead if you have a lathe and basic skills. If you don't, there are several people who can do it for you, the best of which (in my opinion) is our own "Charlie ny". If you do decide to get one from eBay, make sure it is complete and has a good cap and rotor.

I will admit I am a real fan of the old Mallory "flattops" and run them on ALL of my engines (flatheads, Olds Rockets, early hemi's and even an SBC or two), so I may be prejudiced, but I think they run great!

Running one for about 10 yrs maybe more . I bought from speedway and it was complete .
Running an 8ba , shaved heads , offi intake , small carter 4 barrel . Runs great . Yesterday , while cleaning the back shop , I found a dozen or so Tigercat CD ignition systems , so I installed one .
