48-50 F1 wiring question

Hey gang I have a buddy that picked up a 48 F1 project. It has a new factory style wiring harness that was installed prior. The truck has a constant draw on the battery. So I started disconnecting things to find the draw, and found that the field wire on the generator/voltage regulator has battery voltage all the time which doesn't seem correct? He had the generator checked at a shop and is good, also new voltage regulator. So where would the power on the field wire be coming from?
Thanks Joe

stuck voltage reg points?

I'm not sure? It's brand new and it did the same thing with the first regulator. I don't think the regulator should have power to it unless it's running?

1 Attachment(s)
The field wire only goes from the regulator to the generator so most likely
a problem in the regulator.

I understand that,That's why I was asking where the power could be coming from. I feel like they may have something hooked up wrong. I don't think the regulator is faulty.

Joe, I would start with the battery and check things from that direction. Pay special attention to the starter solenoid.

I had something similiar happening,Don,t you have to energize the regulator???

The regulator has battery voltage all the time (BATT terminal) The CUT-OUT opens when the key is off, key on, cutout closes. If the CUT-OUT points stick closed it will drain the battery. How about something simple like brake lights or interior light stuck on?

Re: 48-50 F1 wiring question

If the field wire has battery voltage all the time, the regulator is either faulty (regulator points staying closed with engine stopped) or the wire hooked to the field is coming from somewhere other than the regulator. I believe that's the only way this can happen.

Can you unhook the field wire at both the reg and the gen and check it with an ohmmeter to make sure it's the same wire?
Battery is positive ground, correct?
Generator charges properly?

Re: 48-50 F1 wiring question

on the generator housing there are two connections, one is a ground that usually connects to the regulator at the mount screw. second wire is the field wire from gen to regulator. make sure the wires are correct. if correct go the battery wire on the solenoid and disconnect, put a test light between the wire and the solenoid and then start disconnecting wires until the light goes out. start with the batt wire on the regulator. the brighter the light the more amps are being used

Re: 48-50 F1 wiring question

Update I went over this afternoon with a multi meter. It didn't take long to figure out what they did wrong. The hot lead that was supposed to be on the battery side of the regulator was on the armature post so it was making the field wire hot. I put everything where it belongs and everything works as it should. Thanks for the replys

Re: 48-50 F1 wiring question

Makes sense...the regulator thinks the generator has started charging so it energizes the field to control it. Well done!

Wires on the correct posts always helps! :)
