Horn/headlight switch issue

On a short drive at dusk this afternoon, with the headlights on, the horn blew spontaneously several times - I did not press the horn button. After turning the headlights off, the problem stopped.

Has anyone had this issue before ? Any idea what is causing this ??

Thanks - JIm

Re: Horn/headlight switch issue

Jim,
The end of the horn/light rod is part of the horn circuit. The very bottom of the rod, presses onto a little brass "button" inside the switch. There may be a little bend to the bottom of your rod, or the brass button is a little off, so what happens is that when you turn your lights on, the position of the horn rod contacts changes a little bit and grounds which allows the horn to go on. Check the alignment of everything and see if the bottom of the horn rod looks like it has a bend in it when you turn it around.

Re: Horn/headlight switch issue

The center spring contact on the harness contact plate is the hot wire to the horn. It goes up through the top rotating plate of the light switch and sometimes contacts the surrounding metal. A short piece of shrink tubing round the spring should insulate it, leave the top of the contact open.

Re: Horn/headlight switch issue

I put some shrink tubing around the spring contact in the light switch and plan a test drive this afternoon to see if the problem still exists.

Thanks for the tip !
