Set screw for dendix on starter
 

I haven't been on line for a while but thought I'd share a little project. The screws on the starter backed out and damaged the armature. Thank God there was no damage to the fly wheel. But, then the issue arose. Where does one get the set screw for the bendix? I couldn't find one, so I made one. I did a tutorial for another online site and wanted to post it here for other folks that may encounter the same issue. The link is here:

There are two different Bendix units. One unit has 5/16" diameter Bendix bolts, and the other has 3/8" diameter Bendix bolts. Both units use the special Bendix bolts with low profile heads. The unit with 3/8" screws is superior because the screws are stronger.
Bratton's has both diameters of the Bendix bolts and special lock-washers. You should also carefully inspect the inside of the spring coils for cracks.

Thank you Bob C. I was indeed working on the bendix you have shown. Tough little buggers to figure out. But I have the time and haven't been licked by any machine yet.

What year is your car and what is the diameter of your starter shaft? From you description I suspect you have a 28 or early 29 whose starter has a 1/2 inch shaft. The photo I am sharing is the set screw like screw used on the ‘special” bendix released for the 1/2 insh shaft starters. A screw with a head on it will probably his the flywheel and cause damage. Your best bet is to make a screw like the one in my photo from a bolt of the correct size.

The car is a 1930. I did have to make the exact screw you pictured. I was able to do that with a drill, files and hacksaw. I feel I have a personal connection to the car now that I made something for it instead of ordering and getting someone else's work.
