Hi, I need some suggestions (w/pics if possible) of what others have done for inconspicuous rear signal lights on a 40, please. Still 6V.

Hi Paul. I installed this system on my '41 Merc. It uses existing tail/brake and park lights...no need to convert to dual elements or add on any extra signal lights.It flashes what you already have stock on the car. Excellent quality.

Have seen small single cowl light mounted on each side, beneath the bumper and toward the front of the vehicle a little.

Practically hidden from view but visible from directly behind the vehicle.

yeah, use the existing lights what ever it takes. i personally hate when folks use plastic hardware store lights on old cars. ugly-no taste. more common on A's & T's, but old cowl lights are not rare and look so much better imho

I just installed two element sockets in the taillights and park lights on my 45 commercial, not difficult and it doesn't alter the look of the vehicle.

Use the existing rear lights and just rewire according the instructions with the switch. Extra lights look terrible to me. Use the parking lights for the front signal lights or buy a kit that allows you to have both parking and signal lights. The kit mounts under the parking light lens. Kit is about $25. I've done three 40's this way and it works great

In case the info is useful, on the front of my 41 pickup, (same as a 40) I found some orange 21watt bulbs that fitted the parking light holders. They are small bulbs, the size of a normal parking light bulb, but the same wattage as a flasher bulb and orange.

I used these in my parking light holders as directional indicators. For parking lights I used new headlight units with the parking light built in (like an early Mini).

Job done on the front and no extra lights bolted on or modifications to the front parking lamp holders.

I know you were asking about the rears, I just wanted to share that info.

For the rears I normally just use the brake light filaments and a home made relay setup.

I have a friend who put an extra socket with bulb in a 40 taillight. It is a little close in there but works. This also worked on a 39.

I have run turn signals in 39 and also 32 tail lights using the original sockets. I used relays to disconnect from the brake switch and connect to the flasher. I am sure there are kits that do the same thing. I have used this in three cars. It also works for the front. It disconnects the running/cowl lights from the light switch and connects them to the flasher. I use a extra small toggle switch to ground the relays.Very hard to see.

After my '47 was rear ended, I knew the rear stop and turn lights needed to be upgraded. I found a LED light bar that I mounted on top of the rear license plate. It is also furnished with suction cups for convenience. It is made by a company in Holland, Michigan. It has been quite a while since I ordered some, so I don't know if they are still available. the web site is www.brakeflasher.com The LEDs are very bright, and come on as solid, then flash. I don't recall the price, but I do know that it could have saved over $2,000 in damage!
