Elkins, West Virginia Did anyone attend the MARC Tour in Elkins, WVA, this year. If so, was the stream train in service at Cass, WVA?

Re: Elkins, West Virginia Yes it sure was.

Absolutely and enjoyed the ride. Learned about switch backs and gear driven drive wheels.

Re: Elkins, West Virginia Thank you...I missed the MARC tour there but want to go ride the train next spring. Just got back from riding the Great Smokey Mountain Railroad in Bryson City, NC.. A lot of fun...

Nick, When you get to Cass be sure to get the machine shop, restoration and what’s left of the mill tour. Lots of background information on the Shay engines they have operational and under restoration as well as historical background on the mill.

Re: Elkins, West Virginia My wife and I rode our motorcycles to Cass and rode the train up to the top. It was one of our favorite vacations. Those lumber men had a rough life getting out the pulp for paper.
The Shay was a real mechanical marvel. John |
Re: Elkins, West Virginia Cass has two train rides, one a 2 hour one to Whitaker Station and a 4 hour one to Bald Knob, both use the Shay engines. Depending on the time of the year, reservations might be a good idea. There is also a ride in Durbin WVA called the Durbin Rocket, about 17 miles away that follows the Cumberland river. https://mountainrailwv.com/tour/cass...ald-knob-trip/
